At the latest chess tournament in Iowa City, Kirkwood Chess Wars V Andy Luo went 4.5 out of 5 games and took First Place, and Eric Liu tied for second with 4 games of 5! Nathan Wei didn't do so shabby and placed 6th with 3 games. I also want to congratulate Karina Li! who came to her first rated tournament! I showed the game she played against my daughter this morning and where she could have pulled out a victory. (pictures to come later)
If you go to a tournament, you will get a notation book and we will spend time at chess club going over your games using a computer analysis of the game. But we can only do this if you write down your games correctly.
I am hoping to have a rated tournament sometime over this holiday season, I will be out of town and have to work over Christmas. Either Dec 31st during the day, or Jan 2nd the day before school, if you would be so kind, write a comment on which day would work better for you and I will try to have the tournament on the day that more people can attend.
On the Chess Ladder this morning, Barry Vigil defended his #1 spot by defeating Yulong, and was in the middle of a heated match with Andy Luo when time came to an end. Aaron Smith was quite a speedy player and defeated three players in rapid succession. Andrey joined US Chess this morning, and I hope to see him at tournaments in the near future. Have a great holiday season and here are the results from this morning.

Tournaments! We are playing hard!
At the ICPL kids tournament three Borlaug Students brought home some hardware.
Aaron Smith won 3rd place in the third grade!
Vladimir Tivanski won 2nd Place in 4th grade!
Barry Vigil Won 3rd Place in 4th Grade!
we had 10 of the 58 kids that participated! Great show
We had 6 players at the K-12 open in Ames. Eric (Yo Yo) Liu won the best Under 600 rating in the K-5 section. All of our players did well winning more games than they lost, but nobody placed in the top 5 of their section. But a solid performance by all, I am excited at our prospects in some more of the upcoming tournaments.
Andrey was not present today to defend his top spot on the ladder, Eric Liu moved up to the second spot like lightening.
