Borlaug Player Wins Tournament!

At the latest chess tournament in Iowa City, Kirkwood Chess Wars V Andy Luo went 4.5 out of 5 games and took First Place, and Eric Liu tied for second with 4 games of 5!  Nathan Wei didn't do so shabby and placed 6th with 3 games.  I also want to congratulate Karina Li!  who came to her first rated tournament!  I showed the game she played against my daughter this morning and where she could have pulled out a victory.  (pictures to come later)

If you go to a tournament, you will get a notation book and we will spend time at chess club going over your games using a computer analysis of the game.  But we can only do this if you write down your games correctly.

I am hoping to have a rated tournament sometime over this holiday season, I will be out of town and have to work over Christmas.  Either Dec 31st during the day, or Jan 2nd the day before school, if you would be so kind, write a comment on which day would work better for you and I will try to have the tournament on the day that more people can attend.

On the Chess Ladder this morning, Barry Vigil defended his #1 spot by defeating Yulong, and was in the middle of a heated match with Andy Luo when time came to an end.  Aaron Smith was quite a speedy player and defeated three players in rapid succession.  Andrey joined US Chess this morning, and I hope to see him at tournaments in the near future.  Have a great holiday season and here are the results from this morning.

There is a tournament coming up at Kirkwood Community College this Saturday, Matt Power and I will be the directors it is a great opportunity to see how your student rates outside of Borlaug.  If you are not rated with USCF come at 9am so that we can get you set up with a membership.  3 month trial scholastic membership is only $8 dollars a year membership is $24 and comes with a bimonthly chess magazine.

Tournaments!  We are playing hard!

At the ICPL kids tournament three Borlaug Students brought home some hardware.

Aaron Smith won 3rd place in the third grade!
Vladimir Tivanski won 2nd Place in 4th grade!
Barry Vigil Won 3rd Place in 4th Grade!

we had 10 of the 58 kids that participated!  Great show

We had 6 players at the K-12 open in Ames.  Eric (Yo Yo) Liu won the best Under 600 rating in the K-5 section.  All of our players did well winning more games than they lost, but nobody placed in the top 5 of their section.  But a solid performance by all, I am excited at our prospects in some more of the upcoming tournaments.

Andrey was not present today to defend his top spot on the ladder, Eric Liu moved up to the second spot like lightening.

Tounraments Galore!

Today, I observed a lot of seriously contended chess matches.  I loved the concentration that kids were putting forth in playing their games.

Upcoming Tournaments

Tomorrow!  Borlaug After School Special!  3 round G30 Swiss at 2:30pm at the Borlaug Media Center!  should be over at 5:30pm and we will have Medals this time! for the top three players in both the Rated and Unrated Sections.

Saturday Nov 17th!  The ICPL Kids Chess Tournament in Memory of Steve Young!  3rd thru 6th graders, and USCF members under 3rd grade.  It will be 12:00 to register, first game at 1:00pm and goes to 4:30, Steve Young's sister will be present to hand out the trophies and see the legacy her brother created here in Iowa City.

Saturday Dec 1st!  the K-12 open tournament for scholastic chess!  I think we have an excellent k-3 team and K-6 team.  I think we can get some hardware if we go.  I will be driving 5 kids in my Suburban, perhaps we could get some other parents to carpool and get a large team presence, perhaps we can convince Anne Marie to let us put the trophies on top of the bookshelves?

I went to the Quad cities and won the U1000 in the Veterans Day Classic at the Lodge this past weekend winning 3 of my 4 games and tying my final game.  My kids were impressed that daddy came home with a trophy.

On the Chess Ladder  Yulong was dethroned by Andrey, and then consoled himself by finishing the skills checklist and walking away with one of those spiffy chess move recording books, emblazoned with a Borlaug Chess Club sticker!  Andy Luo also completed his skills checklist.  Good Job Guys!

Congratulations!  Justin and Eric Pieper!  Way to go and represent Borlaug in the State Class Chess Tournament.  It was both Eric and Justin's first USCF rated event.  Good Show!

We will be having another tournament on the 15th of November in the Media Center at Borlaug, and The Iowa City Public Library's annual Kids Chess Tournament is coming up on the 17th, Saturday, this one is free and they provide snacks.  The ICPL is unrated and a lot of fun.

On the chess ladder this morning, Liam Willett reclaimed the top spot from Aaron Smith.  Lots of good chess out there.  Two kindergartners came to "check it out" they seemed in awe of all the Chessy Goodness going on.

Unfortunately I will not be able to attend as I am committed as a board member of Kickers and it is the last game of the season, and I am part of the equipment turn in team   sigh......

No movement on the top of the Chess Ladder this week, although Sanjeev moved up quite nicely.  Good work Sanjeev.  Today we did a chess lecture of a game of chess played in 1902 between Harry Nelson Pillsbury and Rudolf Swiderski in Hanover Germany.  The students were given blacks moves, and they were asked for what the best move for white is.  The student with the most correct answers won $364 in shredded currency.  Aaron Smith won the contest!  I will be making this a monthly event at chess club with a different game, and perhaps a more exciting prize.  I will also be having a weekly chess puzzle set up on our new magnetic chessboard hanging wall display.

For the Borlaug After School Special Rated Section,  Gwen Heywood won 1st place from Lucas Elementary, 2nd Yulong Shao,  and tied for 3rd all with 2 points were Nathan Wei, Vladimir Tivanski, Barry Vigil, Andy Luo, and Eric AKA Yoyo Liu.  The Unrated section was won by Andre Arshava (via tiebreaker rules) a perfect score was also achieved by Julian Fender, 3rd place was Karina Li who needs to work on her checkmate with a rook and a king skill.  Thanks for playing.  We will do it again on November 15th in the afternoon and I am going to try to get another school to host as our library will be booked through February after school.

Another Exciting day at the Borlaug Chess Club!  We Saw Nathan Wei dethroned by Vladimir Tivanski,  Aaron Smith Battled Barry Vigil for the 3rd spot on the ladder, I see rematches brewing next week.  On the Chess Ladder as a reminder you cannot play someone that is greater than 7 positions above you.  It will not count and please please please put last names when recording results Sebastian played Bob and I have no Bob on my chess club list and Alexander played Benji and I have no Alexander on my list unless it is a middle name or nickname.  (Update, I went to their classrooms and tracked down the results, Bob is Jikun Zhang and Alexander is Alexandra Curtu)

Big Thanks to Levant Bayman for labeling the new chess pieces, and to Mr. Wei for working on the chess skills book.  We have cool notation books with Borlaug logo stickers for those students completing the skills checklist.

We Will be having a Borlaug Chess Club Mini Tournaments in the Media Center on the 18th of October and the 15th of November right after school there will be two sections Unrated and USCF Rated.  Both sections will be G/30 for three rounds.  Start times will be 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30 so if you cannot be at one of the rounds you can request a bye.  There will be no trophies just bragging rights.
