The Team Competition there was some confusion on.  We changed the award categories for sake of time and figuring out the winners as my computer program did not work properly in sorting the data.  I had to hand calculate the scores and there were some ties.  There were also some incorrectly reported scores, Since the Tournament I verified the scores in question and here is how we handed out the top team trophies.  In the way we gave out trophies, more schools got trophies than the previous scoring modalities.  Here is a list of how things broke down.

Team Trophies

1^st Borlaug Elementary with 16 points, tiebreak score 52.0

2^nd Wickham Elementary with 16 points, Tiebreak score 51.0

3^rd Horn Elementary 15.5 points

4^th place Lincoln with 14.0 points

5^th Coralville Central 13.5 points

6^th Weber Elementary 13 points

Advertised was top K-6 Teams and top K-3 Teams

1^st would have been Borlaug K-6

2^nd Wickham K-6

3^rd place was tied between Coralville Central and Van Allen each with 12 points, with Coralville Central winning on tiebreaks 52.5 to 51.0

OK a calm day in chess, after the last few weeks

I needed a break.

We had a fun and relaxing club this morning.  the number 1 and 2 players Barry Vigil and Nathan Wei are in an epic struggle and did not finish the game.  I took a photo they will continue next week for the battle for first.

Diana Tivanski and Sachiko Goto are rising up quickly on the chess ladder, Sachiko told me that her goal of coming to chess club was so she could beat her dad.  Give her a couple of years and Mr Goto better watch out!  I also love the enthusiasm of J.J. Brown!  He hasn't won a game yet, but he is trying his hardest.  I am sure with more practice he will get that first victory, way to be the little red engine that could J.J. you think you can you think you can!

Great Day, we presented Ms. Shoppa with Borlaug's first competative trophy!  Winning 2nd in the State Elementary Team Chess Tournament on Feb 9th in Cedar Rapids. 

As a team we are going at it again this coming Saturday in Cedar Rapids at the Prairie Chess Series #2!  Lets show up in force and win it!

2nd Place! State Team Champions!!!!!

I am just so proud!  We won second in state!  we were behind in fifth place after the Fourth Round and in the Fifth  (and final) Round we came up BIG!  With Nathan, Barry and Vladimir winning their last game and Andy getting a tie to give us 3.5 out of 4 points, and catapulted us into 2nd place.  It was a stunning finish! 

Most Important Tournament of the year is next week!

Well, with the snow day last week, we did not have chess club, however lots of chess was going on!

Congradulations to Ziwen Zhou who will be our Iowa Representative to the Barber Chess Tournament at the US Open in Madison Wisconsin, Ziwen is in 6th grade and chose to finish his scholastic career at Weber Elementary, best wishes and I know he will do Iowa Proud.

Barry Vigil went to the LeatherJackets tournament in Cedar Rapids and tied for best under 1100 player, but lost on tiebreakers, he walked away with $5 as three other players were tied with him.

Two weeks ago Yulong had dibs on playing Barry for the top spot on the ladder and was defeated.  Who will dethrone Barry on Wednesday?

The two most important tournaments are coming up in the next two Saturdays!  First is the Iowa Elementary Team Champoinship hopefully this will get a link to it.  I will have flyers to send home with kids on Wed, and post one in the school office.  We have a really good chance of winning this.

The other is the following week on Feb 16th Number 2 in the Prairie Chess Series.  Currently we are in second place.  The way the team points are calculated is that every point scored by the team goes to the teams total.  Sooooo the more players we have, the better chances we have in winning.  We did extremely well with the players who came, and just a few points away from gold!

Great Job Bulldogs!  at Saturdays Prairie Chess Series #1 we are in contention for the top school in both the K-2 and K-5 sections.  The trick is to get the most players to attend.  The more players the more points our school will get.  Each game a student wins, it counts for the school teams total, so even if you come and only win one game, you help our teams total.  I would also have to say that even though we may not have had the most players from one school we are either in first or second place of these sections.

The Barber/Denker qualifying tournament is this weekend (see last weeks post) or go to www.iowachess.org and you will find information.  It is in Iowa City at Kirkwood community college, it is a great opportunity for good chess!

On the Ladder this morning, Barry Vigil again defended his title against two players.  Yulong, you will have first chance at Barry next week.  We welcome Sachiko Goto and J.J. Brown to the club, which brings us up to 54 members.  It is getting crowded in the library these days,

Chess Tournaments Galore!

Good Morning!  Welcome back from Winter Break. 

Chess "Season" is in full swing!  There will be a tournament a week for most of Jan/Feb (see below)

We welcomed 5 new members this morning.  Barry Vigil defended the top of the ladder with a win over Yulong Shao and a draw vs Andy Luo who moved up to the second spot.  Big mover of the day was Diana Tivanski who won her first game at the club and jumped up to the 30 spot.  I played a game with Eric Pieper who rascally stole my queen in the early going but failed to capitalize and the game ended without a conclusion, Eric was ahead by a pawn, although I had his king pretty well pinned down, good play Eric.

Also!  Write down your games!  at the next tournament if you write down your games we can analyze them at chess club next Wednesday with my chess software!  It is a whole lot of fun and we can see where mistakes and brilliant moments are in your games!

2013 Prairie Chess Series, Tournament #1 (USCF Rated)
The first of three tournaments (1/12, 2/16, 3/16). With the availability of the USCF 3 month trial membership, all three tournaments of the 2013 Prairie Chess Series are rated and will require USCF membership. Four sections will be held: K-2, K-5, K-8, and K-12. Sections K-2 and K-5 will play 5 Games with time control of 30 minutes per player per game. Sections K-8 and K-12 will play 4 games with time control of 45 minutes per player per game. Where: Prairie Creek Intermediate School ,401 76th Avenue ,(School Cafeteria) ,Cedar Rapids ,IA 52404 Reg: On-site registration ends at 9:45 am. Rounds: K-2 and K-5: Round 1 at 10:15 am, Round 2 at 11:15 am, Lunch, Round 3 at 1:00 pm, Rounds 4 & 5 ASAP (estimated finish: 3:30, then trophies). K-8 an K-12: Round 1 at 10:15, Lunch, Round 2 at 12: 15 pm, Rounds 3 & 4 ASAP (estimated finish, 4:30 pm). Entry Fee: 10 if registered before tournament (per date). $15 on site. $25 for all three tournaments if register for all three in advance. Individual Tournament Trophies

• K-2: 1st - 3rd Overall, U400 (Top Score), U200 (Top 2 Scores), Unrated (Top 2 Scores);

• K-8: 1st-6th Overall, Top Score U800, U600, U400, Unrated;
• K-12: 1st-3rd Overall, U800, U600, Unrated.
• First Tournament Players:Medals for all players participating in their first USCF Rated Tournament.

Series trophies: Total score from all three events and three highest school total scores (all players) from all 3 events. Series class prizes (e.g. U600) based on rating in January supplement:

• Team Trophies:Top three team scores for K-2, K-5, K-8, and K-12
• Individual Trophies: Trophies awarded for same categories as individual tournament trophies (only bigger)

2013 Iowa Denker (Grades 9-12) & Barber (Grades K-8) Qualifying Tournament
The Iowa State Chess Association is pleased to host Denker and Barber qualifying event to determine the High School and Grade K-8 Champion. The Denker is open to high school students (9-12) only. Barber is open to students in grades K-8 only. Champions have the right to represent Iowa in the 2013 Denker Tournament of High School Champions and Barber K-8 State Champions to be held in Madison, Wisconsin, in August, 2013. Students must be under 19 as of 9/1/2013. In the case of a tie for first place, a match will be held at mutually agreed upon time to determine the representative to the national event Where: Iowa City ,Kirkwood Community College - Iowa City Campus ,1816 Lower Muscatine Road ,Iowa City ,IA 52240 Reg: On-site registration will be from 9:00 to 9:45 am on the day of the tournament.
